How do I apply for a Special Occasion License for an event where alcohol will be served?

There are two types of events for which you need a Special Occasion License (SOL):

  • Any public event where alcohol is being served or sold. Even if you not selling alcohol you will need an SOL as well as the approval of the municipal government and the local police force. If you're holding a public event where alcohol is sold, you basically become a bar owner for the night and any rules that apply to a bar owner will apply to you as the host.
  • Any private event where 150 or more guests are expected and alcohol will be available.

SOLs are available only through BC government liquor stores. If you have questions about whether the event you are planning falls into one of these categories, contact your local BC government liquor store. External link, opens in a new windowLearn more about SOLs.

Please note: SOLs are NOT available through Coquitlam RCMP or private, VQA or cold beer and wine outlets.

Based on the size and details of your event, you and others may be required to complete the Serving it Right program before your event will qualify for an SOL. External link, opens in a new windowLearn more about the Serving it Right program.

If you are still unsure as to whether you need an SOL for your event, please call the Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency line at 604-945-1550 and ask to speak to the Administration NCO. You will be transferred to a police officer who can answer your questions.
