How do I get rid of an unwanted firearm?
Registration, secure storage and proper disposal of firearms are critical to community safety. If you have a firearm that you no longer want, you can turn it over to police for disposal. This the only way to ensure that your unwanted firearm doesn't end up in the wrong hands being used for the wrong reasons.
Here's how the process works for residents of Anmore, Belcarra, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam:
- Do NOT bring the firearm to us, we will come to you. Not only is it illegal to transport an unlicensed weapon, it’s a bad idea to enter a police building holding a firearm.
- Call the Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency line at 604-945-1550. You will be given a police file number and you can arrange for a police officer to pick up the firearm.
- On the appointed day and time do NOT bring the firearm to the door. Leave it securely stored and take the police officer to the weapon so that the officer can ensure the firearm is unloaded, secure it and transport it safely.
Once the firearm has been picked-up it will be brought back to the detachment, properly accounted for, recorded and then destroyed.
