Bike Theft Prevention Information & Tips

The Coquitlam RCMP does not store recovered bicycles unless an owner has been identified. In the event your bike is stolen it's important you report the theft to the police.

Do:

• Record your bike's serial number, even if your bike isn't worth a lot of money. In the event your bike is stolen, this is how the police will be able to identify you as the owner of the bike.
• Engrave your driver's license number on the frame and any valuable components. Engravers are available from the Coquitlam RCMP main detachment and Community Police Stations.
• Take a photograph of your bike as a reference to assist police in identification.
• Lock your bike with a quality lock or even two (a U-lock and cable lock). By using two different types of locks you make it more difficult for a thief to steal your bike.
• Lock your bike, even when it's stored in the back of your vehicle, garage or on a vehicle bike rack. High-end mountain bikes that are hanging on the back of a pick up truck are an easy target for a bike thief if they are left unsecured. Secure them to the vehicle.

Don't:

• Leave your bike unsecured. Not even for a minute. All it takes is a couple of seconds for a thief to hop on an unsecured bike and ride away.
• Park in dark and secluded areas. Whenever possible, lock your bike to a bike a rack in a well lit and high traffic area.
• Lock the front wheel only. Always loop the lock through the bike frame and wheel, otherwise, you may find your wheel and lock still attached to the bike rack and the rest of the bike gone.
• Leave bike accessories and quick release wheels and seat posts. Consider replacing the quick release on your seat post with a lock and always properly secure the quick release wheel with the other wheel and frame. Whenever possible, take accessories such as paniers, lights and pumps with you.

Where do I find my serial number?

The serial number is typically located under the bottom bracket, where the two pedal cranks meet. To find the serial number turn your bike over and look on the underside of the frame. Depending on the brand, you are looking for a string of numbers and letters on a sticker or engraved into the frame.

Other common locations for serial number placement are on the head tube at the front of the bike, or on the rear drop out. If you can't find the serial number check with the bike manufacture for the serial number placement.
